Detailed plans, if you can see them :-)

FInal plans

Here is the plan, I have some more detailed plans I will try to upload later but this gives a good idea

It's been a while!

Sorry for the lack of news, we were in the perfecting phase.. We knew what we wanted but we needed to get it tweaked.  Made lots of changes, upgraded many things, changed location of appliances.. It's going to be AWESOME!

So here's the project.

The island is going to be made out of Walnut with a chocolate stain, we are looking for granite that will contrast, when we find the slab, I will post a pic...

The perimeter cabinets are painted white (frosty white) to be exact.  We also need to go pick our granite for that.

All ends are covered with doors so it looks finished, the lower cabinets are finished to look like furniture not cabinets.

There's an appliance garage in the pantry which will house the toaster and the coffee machine.  There a granite countertop matching the perimeter counter there too.

Here are the final appliances and other choices:

  • Thermador Induction Cooktop 36"

  1. Thermador Single oven 30" (under the cooktop)

  • JennAir Microwave with Speed oven in the pantry under the appliance garage countertop.

  • Kitchen Aid Drawer fridge in the island with panels matching the island cabinets.

  • Pulls on all doors and drawers, probably this one:
For the sink, we ended up picking this one:

And the faucet:

I'll post the plans in the next post

Nest steps

On Monday the 4th, the kitchen designer and her husband, the general contractor and carpenter are coming to measure the kitchen, we'll be able to get final plans from that.  That's why I had to pick the appliances since the cabinets will be built to go with the appliances. Once they have measured, she'll propose new plans, we'll make any last minute changes and then cabinets will be ordered.  It takes 9-10 weeks for cabinets to come so we'll be waiting for a while.

I'm really hoping to get it done before the summer... All this is making me want to do the bathroom upstairs LOL...

Appliances.. Wow, there's a lot of options

We will be replacing the range, can't say I will miss the crappy one we have now!  We'll also replace the microwave that is over the range right now, it's a poor excuse for venting, although I'll say, it's the only GE appliance we had that never broke in 10 years..
We're keeping the 2 year old Samsung fridge and the 10 year old Bosch dishwasher (best appliance ever!  I love that dishwasher).

Microwave: So we'll have to buy a new microwave, and since I wanted to add another oven but we don't have much space for it, I'll go with a combo microwave/convection oven.  So this is the new one, it's a Miele

Range:  I really wanted a bigger range, so we'll be going with a 6 burner Wolf gas range.  It has great reviews, it's simple (only knobs, no electronics) and who doesn't love the red knobs!!

Drawer Fridge:   Our fridge isn't very big and our boys eat a ton of food (and it will get worse I'm sure...) The solution?  A drawer fridge in the island.  Great for fruit, veggies and cheeses.   Imagine it with panels matching the cabinets, not brown like this pic.

Also need to find a venting hood for over the range, we won't see it since it will be under cabinets. I'll also get the blower outside so we don't have a loud noise when it's in use..

That's it for appliances and plenty, it's amazing how expensive they can be!!!

Preliminary Plans

We have plans!  So exciting, it's starting to look like a new kitchen.  We reviewed then with the kitchen designer this morning to get an idea of the price and options.  We will be going with the plans with the island that turns, still deciding some things but we're pretty sure of this design, it maximizes the use of space.

Only question left for us is, do we replace the slider door with a single french door to add cabinets next to the fridge and put a double oven there.  Not sure if we want to spend the extra dollar to do it, debating...  Next step is to confirm with the designer that we will be using her team to move forward and then they come over to discuss what will need to be remodeled.

Here are some pics, what do you think???

Side view of the island, this is a cad rendering so it doesn't have all the details but it gives a good idea of the use of space

Cabinets

Well here's the bulk of the project cost. Cabinets!  We're going with custom cabinets, the space is not standard and it's pretty much the only way to get what we want.  The style will be Shaker overlay.  That means that the door goes over the face of the cabinet, it's not inset.  They will be white for the perimeter cabinets and the island will be burgundy or black, still deciding on that.

Here's an example of white shaker cabinets, I'll be going with a different style of pulls but it gives you an idea....
